Description

In this author’s second book, Rob Granger once again teams up with Kevin Robinson, the lead scientist on an earlier expedition to the Congo. This time, their mission is to visit Mount Saint Helens – a volcano in the USA. One purpose of their trip is to investigate evidence which seems to contradict the teaching of geology in school classrooms. As the team begin their quest, things start to go badly wrong and it would appear that there are some who want to disrupt their work. However, is this for the sake of the work itself, or is there a more sinister explanation? Unfortunately for Rob, his problems do not end when he returns to the UK and finds himself plunged into a desperate countrywide search for someone close to him.

‘This fictional mystery story deals with the question of the age of the earth and the very relevant eruption of Mount Saint Helens in 1980 in Washington state, America. Once started, you won’t want to put it down! It’s a story of intrigue, adventure and danger, with surprising twists and turns. The characters are welldeveloped, and it has an engaging plot. The geological evidence (both for and against the earth being millions of years old), which the book’s characters discuss, is referenced at the end of the book for those who want to dig deeper. The characters (both believers
and sceptics) discuss the gospel and other important issues in a way that is accurate and true to life. The book will entertain and inform Christians and non- Christians alike. I highly recommend it!’

An unusual adventure story!

I enjoyed this, though I had expected an adventure with a bit of teaching about the age of the earth thrown in! As I am in my mid eighties, I did not study geology at school, so I got a bit lost in the details and found the some of the photos rather a muddle, eg "which bit of a cliff is the part which shows the important curve? I can see several curves!" On my first read, I was in a hurry to get to the exciting rescue, but I followed the arguments better on a second read!

This book would appeal to certain people, who were interested enough to consider the points raised, yet still enjoyed an exciting mystery/adventure!

There are a number of references to Tony Green's earlier book - it would have been helpful to have read this first for the background to Set in Stone.

I was impressed that someone with a visual disability had been able to describe the views etc so well. I worked for over 30 years with people suffering various degrees of sight loss so I realise what a problem this can be.
